Plastic Pegs Are The Future

身為台灣的BMX Rider,國外已經流行塑膠peg好一陣子了!你們不能不知道這個趨勢!

Lately plastic pegs have become a hot topic in BMX. Some people love them, some people hate them, but I haven’t seen any good, organized discussion about them yet so I figured I’d throw out my thoughts. Here we go.

最近BMX界中最紅的話題莫過於塑膠火箭炮了。有些人熱愛塑膠火箭炮，也有些人不喜歡它們，但我目前沒有看過任何對塑膠火箭炮比較完整的討論，所以我想我要發表我自己的想法！開始吧！

First, plastic pegs make a lot of spots rideable that just normally wouldn’t be.
You can grind aluminum rails (with wax). You can grind marble ledges that would otherwise be incredibly sticky. You can grind shitty aluminum coping ledges at skateparks that normally aren’t worth grinding. Wood ledges become a lot more enjoyable. And on top of all that, it’s not like you can just grind those things, those things all grind GOOD. I’ve seen people on plastic pegs icepick long ledges and rails that NOBODY would be able to icepick without plastics.

首先，塑膠火箭炮讓我們可以騎更多從前無法騎的點(spot)。你可以卡鋁竿(上過蠟的)，也可以卡粗糙的大理石平台，也可以卡極限場裡那些有鋁製角鐵的平台（像是內湖極限場跟嘉義新港極限場、高雄中正極限場），使木頭平台卡起來更滑更順，重點就是：你不只是能卡那些東西，塑膠火箭炮使上述的東西都變得超好卡！我看過有人用塑膠火箭炮做超長距離的ice-pick，而沒有人能用金屬火箭炮卡到那種距離。

Almost everything else grinds better too. Well, not everything, but close to everything. Most steel rails grind just as good with plastics as they do with steel. Sometimes steet rails need wax, but sometimes steel rails need wax to grind with steel pegs too. Waxed up ledges grind way better. Anything with metal coping grinds better. I’ve been riding plastic pegs for about 4 months and I haven’t found anything yet that I wanted to put metal pegs back on for.

幾乎所有東西都變得滑更好卡！大部分街上的鐵竿卡起來都和金屬火箭炮一樣滑，而打過蠟的平台卡起來比金屬火箭炮更滑順，有角鐵的東西就更不用說。我已經裝了四個月的塑膠火箭炮，而我還沒有找到任何東西是我想把金屬火箭炮裝回來去卡的！

You sound stupid when you say that plastic pegs are for pussies.
Butcher has signature plastic pegs. Butcher. Do you know who Butcher is? If street riding was a country, Butcher would be the president. You aren’t tougher than Butcher. Nobody is. My friend told me that he went riding with Butcher a couple years ago and that before the session he drank 2 OG Four Loko’s and smoked 2 blunts. Butcher can survive anything. When you say that plastic pegs are for pussies, you’re basically calling Butcher a pussy. I don’t care who you are, you sound stupid calling Butcher a pussy.

如果你說塑膠火箭炮是娘炮在用的，在我聽起來就膚淺可笑了！ANIMAL傳奇街道選手Butcher他就有自己的專屬簽名火箭炮，你知道Butcher是誰嗎?如果把街騎比喻成一個國家，那Butcher就是那個國家的總統！你沒有比Butcher更硬派，沒有人比他更硬派。我朋友說兩年前他和Butcher去騎車，他騎之前還有辦法先喝兩瓶酒加兩支麻菸，照樣出去騎。如果你說塑膠火箭炮是娘炮在用的那你基本上就是在說Butcher是娘炮，我不管你是誰，都不應該說Butcher是娘炮!

A lot of your favorite riders ride plastics. Corey Martinez, Nathan Williams, Christian Rigal, Tony Neyer, Jason Enns, Biz, Ben Lewis, Drew York, Bruno Hoffman. All ride plastics. I could keep going. Every day someone tries them, gets hooked and becomes a believer. It’s only a matter of time til it happens to you too.

以上是更多目前在用塑膠火箭炮的選手，當然每天都有更多的選手在嘗試塑膠火箭炮，然後迷上它們！要不要用塑膠火箭炮也只是時間早晚的問題。

You probably hate them for stupid reasons. I knew a lot of people who broke the G Sport Pleg’s when they first came out. I never rode them, but I heard some bad reviews. I know they’ve changed up the plastic they use so I’m not saying that they’re still bad or anything (I’d actually love to give them a try), but I’ve heard about people having issues with them. I don’t know anyone who rides them. Everyone I mentioned earlier rides either the Demolition, Primo or Animal plastic pegs, all of which have an aluminum core and a plastic sleeve. I’m sure there are other good ones out there too. Whenever you start talking about plastic pegs, someone inevitably brings up a bad experience they had with Plegs. That’s irrelevant.

你可能會因為某些愚蠢的原因而討厭它們，我知道很多人斷過G-Sport的塑膠火箭炮，我沒用過，但我聽過不好的評價。我知道他們已經有換了不同的塑膠，所以我不是在說他們仍然不好或是怎樣，但我有聽過其他人用了它們而發生過問題。在我認識的人中沒有人是用G-Sport的塑膠火箭炮，上述的那些選手都是用Demolition、Primo、Animal的塑膠火箭炮，這三家的塑膠火箭炮都是以鋁合金製的核心外面包裹塑膠為概念而製成。我想信許多人因為當初裝過G-Sport的塑膠火箭炮而有過不好的經驗，這我能理解！

The feeling of grinding steel on steel isn’t that great. Whenever you start talking about plastic pegs, someone says something like:
“The feeling of steel grinding on steel is the best, man”
I can honestly say that no, it’s not. The feeling of grinding is the best. I get just as much pleasure out of icepicking a ledge with a plastic peg as I did when I had steel pegs, it’s just that now it’s a lot easier, I keep my speed a lot better and I probably don’t even need wax.

其實用鐵的火箭炮去卡鐵竿的感覺沒有那麼好，每當你提到塑膠火箭炮時或許有些人會說：「用金屬火箭炮去卡鐵竿比較爽」，我可以誠實的告訴你那是錯的，塑膠火箭炮可以讓我的Ice-pick滑的比用金屬火箭炮時更常更遠，塑膠火箭炮使一切變得更容易！我能在卡的時候維持更快的速度而且我根本不需要打蠟。

Plastic pegs are getting better. I know at least 2 companies are prototyping plastic pegs with a steel insert. This is a good idea. It’s probably going to solve a couple of the major issues that plastic’s present (I’ll get to that in a second).

新的塑膠火箭炮比從前更強更耐用!我知道至少有兩間公司(The shadow conspiracy等...)正在測試裡面鐵外面包塑膠的火箭砲，這個點子也很棒，也許會解決現在塑膠火箭炮上最主要的幾個問題。

You’re a hypocrite. You wax ledges and rails. We all do. A lot of times the only difference between an amazing ledge and a shitty ledge are a couple of wax sessions. You wax shit for the same exact reason that we ride plastic pegs; it makes spots grind better. It’s the same thing.

不要在固執了，我們平常都會在平台或竿子上打蠟！其實很多時候一個好的平台和不好的平台的差別只在於有沒有上蠟。你打蠟的原因跟我們裝塑膠火箭炮的原因是一樣的，都是為了讓東西卡起來更滑！

Everyone who tries them, ends up sticking with them. I have seen a few people put them on for a while and then become a part time plastic rider, but I don’t know anyone who has put them on, hated it and quit using them completely. The benefits are immediately obvious.
There are other reason to ride plastics as well that I didn’t include in the above list because I don’t really care about them, but they are worth mentioning:
They’re lighter. Plastic and aluminum are lighter than steel. The difference is small and I don’t personally give a shit, but it’s true.

用過的都說讚!我只看過少部分的人是曾經裝過塑膠火箭炮，然後變成是偶爾需要時才拿出來裝，但我沒看過有人是裝了塑膠火箭炮之後討厭它甚至完全不用它的！它的優點你馬上就能體會！
They are way less likely to damage spots. Skaters are always bitching about pegs ruining spots and while I totally don’t care, they’re right. We’ve all seen pegs destroy ledges. If you ride plastics, the impact on ledges and coping is way less so they are far less likely to break or dent. I don’t care what skaters think. But it benefits all of us as well. Ever tried to icepick a ledge with a big chunk taken out of it? Not fun.

另一個重點就是，用塑膠火箭炮更不容易破壞平台，板族常常抱怨我們的火箭炮會把平台卡爛，（不過我個人是完全不在乎）但他們說得沒錯，很明顯地火箭炮容易把平台卡壞（尤其是水泥或木頭平台），如果你是裝塑膠火箭炮，對平台的衝擊會相對減少很多並且更不容易使其壞掉或破損。我是不在乎滑板的是怎麼想，不過這點對我們也有好處，你有嘗試過要ice-pick或tooth-pick一個上面破一個大洞的平台嗎?這可不是開玩笑的…

You can ride them in skateparks that don’t allow metal pegs. This hasn’t happened to me yet but I know there are skateparks that don’t allow metal pegs but do allow plastic pegs. If you know of any, that’s obviously a selling point.

你也可以去騎那些禁止金屬火箭炮進入的極限場(通常是國外才有)，國外有些極限場只開放給裝塑膠火箭炮的選手。

All that being said, there are problems with plastics. It’s a relatively expensive habit. If you know what you’re doing, plastics can last quite a while but they aren’t going to last for years and years like steel pegs do. I’ve been riding them for about 4 months and I haven’t rotated my front pegs, but I grinded through a couple rear pegs. To be fair to the pegs, both grinded through while I was trying to film a clip on a ledge and I didn’t notice that I was grinding through them. You have to keep an eye on them if you want to make them last. But I would estimate that the average person who grinds as much as I do could ride a rear plastic peg for at least 2 or 3 months if you rotate them enough, and probably much longer for front pegs since they get a lot less use and you put a lot less pressure on them.
You’ll still want metal pegs once in a while. Certain rails, steel just works better. I haven’t really run into any of those situations personally but I know that some dudes put steel on for certain rail set ups.

說了這麼多，塑膠火箭炮還是有一些問題存在的，它們會相對地增加開銷。在合理的使用之下塑膠火箭炮可以撐好一陣子，但它們沒辦法像金屬火箭炮那樣用好幾年，我自己已經裝了４個月而且我還沒有轉過我的前火箭炮；不過我已經耗掉兩組後火箭炮。兩組都是在我要拍影片時消耗的，當時我沒有特別注意它們快磨完了。換句話說如果你想用得久一點就要多注意它們，我估計假設是跟我消耗的程度差不多的選手（此編輯是屬於卡系的），如果你常轉它，你的後火箭炮大概可以撐兩到三個月，至於前火箭炮大概就能用更久！當然也是有特殊情況,碰到某些竿子時你還是會想裝回金屬火箭炮，我個人是還沒遇到這種情形，但我知道有些人會為了某些竿子而裝回金屬火箭炮！

They make working on your bike kind of a pain in the ass. This is mostly the aluminum’s fault. Sometimes you’ll crush the aluminum after a heavy session and it becomes hard to get your ratchet into the peg to take it off and rotate it. This hasn’t happened to me but I saw it happen to Devin Feil a few weeks ago. Also it’s hard to get your back wheel super tight and keep it that way. No matter how much you tighten down your back wheel, the plastic pressing up against the dropout doesn’t create enough friction so after a while your wheel will loosen up. Granted this happens with steel pegs too, but it happens more with plastics. The steel pegs with plastic sleeves will probably solve these problems.

當然塑膠火箭炮還是有其他缺點，它會讓調整你的車變得有些麻煩。因為他裡面是鋁的關係，有時候當卡得比較暴力的時候（像是黑豹），裡面的鋁會有變形可能，這會讓你的套筒比較難伸進去轉動它或是把火箭炮取下。這是沒有發生在我身上，不過我看過有人發生過！另外，如果裝塑膠火箭炮，輪子就沒辦法鎖到超緊，因為不管你怎麼鎖緊，塑膠火箭炮和dropout之間的磨擦力仍然不夠，所以你每過一陣子輪子可能會變鬆。當然金屬火箭炮也有這個問題，只是塑膠火箭炮會更常發生！

Finally, sometimes you’ll be riding a spot and grind through the plastic and it’ll ruin your session. I was trying to film this really long switch feeble thing and roasted all the way through the peg until I was grinding on aluminum. I didn’t have any tools so I almost had to give up but I was still able to pull it by just going a lot faster. This sucks, but it was my fault for not planning ahead.

最後一個問題，有時候當你騎一個點剛好塑膠火箭炮磨完時，你可能就要下課了。上次我要拍一個很長的反邊ｆｅｅｂｌｅ時就磨到剩下鋁，不過最後我還是騎快一點把它卡完。所以最好還是要帶預備的殼！

And really that’s it. There are a million reasons to ride plastic and barely any not to. Hate all you want, but the revolution is upon us. I sincerely believe that plastic peg sales will eclipse metal peg sales within the next couple years. If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but if I were a betting man I’d put the house on it.
